We did not know what to expect as we arrived into Essen for the 2013 Red Dot Awards. Spotting a few tuxes and high, high heels at the hotel, we knew we had arrived at the right place. Watching the odd stubborn designer in jeans and a black shirt gave us a pang of jealousy, but there was no going back once we put the glad rags on!
We set off to the Alto Theatre to watch the best of the best be presented with awards and enjoy the entertainment of excited men with loud wooden instruments and a taste of German Ballet.
The Designers night followed in what is one of the most impressive venues I have ever been in. The Red Dot Museum was originally a coal mine, but now holds the best of global contemporary design. An A8 Audi chassis hangs from the ceiling, doors splayed open – welcome to the designers church!
We mingled with a wonderful crowd of international designers and their clients, everyone in high spirits enjoying the moment of winning. A fantastic evening all round and here is hoping for another award winning trip next year!
