At Design Partners we often find ourselves designing both for the harshest environments on the planet and for the most extreme user requirements imaginable – robust products that last. When working with firemen we were warned many times of their reputation for breaking tools. We were told of how it will be thrown off the side of a building, taken into burning buildings and how it needs be used when rubble is falling from the ceiling. This was equipment for saving lives, reliability is paramount.
Extreme environments are an equal challenge. When designing connected gas detectors with Honeywell, we found that they could sit for 25 years in the high vibration of nautical engines, others in the extreme climate exposure of the middle East and the Antarctic; and the salt corrosion of off-shore oil platforms. Lives depend on the durability of these products and in collaboration with the Honeywell team, Design Partners created a series of award winning physical and digital products for this purpose.
We understand expert users don’t have the same relationship with their equipment as customers do. They don’t always own their equipment and consequently is not precious to them. But to successfully win their hearts and minds it must be vital. To be vital it must earn their trust. It must surpass their expectations of efficacy, reliability, and durability.
